Anna Mae Wilger

Anna Mae Wilger, age 92, of Athabasca, Alberta, passed away peacefully on August 6,

2025. She was born on September 24, 1932, in Park Falls, Wisconsin, to Frank and Katherine (Pangerl) Pritzl. Anna Mae and Gregory were married on April 28, 1952.

Anna Mae spent her early years in Park Falls and Three Lakes before relocating with her family in 1963 to Crest, California, a small-town east of San Diego. There, she became an active member of St. Louise de Marillac Church, serving in various ministries. She worked as a nurse and generously gave her time as a Cub Scout leader and through other community volunteer work.

In 1974, Anna Mae and her family moved to Athabasca, Alberta, where she would later become a Canadian citizen. She supported the family business and continued her spiritual service at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church. Anna Mae later worked at Athabasca Extendicare, dedicating herself to the care of others until her retirement. Afterward, she embraced a quiet life on a farm overlooking the Tawatinaw Valley with her partner, Peter, where they found joy in gardening and hosting countless family gatherings over the years.

Anna Mae was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gregory (1992), and her parents, Frank and Katherine Pritzl.

She is survived by her children: Duane (Karen) and Lawrence (Susan), both of Florida;

Cary (Evelyn) of Texas; and foster children, Alice and Rose Houle. She is also lovingly remembered by her long-time partner, Peter Smitshoek, along with his children: Roy (Janice), Marilyn and Jack. Anna Mae leaves behind ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 22 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Athabasca. Following the service, lunch will be provided by the Catholic Women's League (CWL) in the parish basement.
