It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Betty Louise Kanuga, age 80, of Athabasca, Alberta. Betty passed away peacefully on November 9, 2025, with her loving children, Kerri and Kyle by her side.
Born in Smoky Lake, Alberta, on October 12, 1945, Betty lived a life filled with love, generosity, laughter, and hard work. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 48 years, Ernie (2013)—the love of her life and partner through every adventure.
Devoted daughter of Bill and Olive Werenka, Betty will be dearly missed by her children Kyle (Emily) of California and Kerri of Cayman Islands; her cherished grandchildren Brittney Kanuga of Switzerland and Cole Kanuga of Alberta; her brothers Ken (Lil), David (Barb) and Tom (2019); as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and countless friends. A woman of remarkable drive and determination, Betty worked tirelessly throughout her life. From the early days of owning and operating the Newbrook Hotel with Ernie, to co-managing Northlands Autobody alongside her dad Bill and brother Tom. She later becoming one of the region’s top real estate agents for nearly 40 years, she approached every endeavor with integrity, pride, and passion.
Outside of work, Betty loved to laugh and enjoy life. She found great joy in curling and bonspieling, she cherished the camaraderie and fun that came with those events. She also loved playing cards with friends, often hosting lively games filled with laughter, good food, and friendly competition. Her home was truly a home—warm, welcoming, and filled with the smells of her delicious cooking. Whether it was a fresh batch of cinnamon buns, a festival feast, or a special coffee shared around the kitchen table, Betty made everyone feel loved and cared for. She especially loved the holidays, and her beautifully decorated Christmas tree which reflected her joy in celebrating life’s moments. Summers at the lake, time spent with family and friends, and her famous hours of blueberry-picking will remain treasured memories for all who knew her. Above all, Betty was a true friend—loyal, compassionate, and always ready with a laugh or a helping hand. Her strength, generosity, and love have left an indelible mark on her family and community.
