David Roy Elgert

It is with great sadness that the family of David Roy Elgert of Athabasca, AB announces his passing on June 27, 2021 at the age of 83 years.

David was born July 9, 1937 to Ewald and Anita Elgert in Bittern Lake, AB. After completing high school in Athabasca, David attended the University of Alberta and graduated with a B.Ed. He spent the next thirty-four years teaching mainly high school chemistry, mathematics, and physics in the County of Athabasca; ten years in Boyle and twenty-four in Athabasca. During this time he coached high school curling and badminton. The badminton teams were successful in winning medals at the County, Zone and Provincial levels.

David enjoyed puttering away in his spare time on his hobby farms near Boyle and Athabasca. After retiring, David helped his children with their various work projects. He also took up the game of golf which he enjoyed. David was an avid reader and philosopher and believed in exercise as an important aspect of his life. David was also very generous, giving to many charities and volunteering with meals on wheels, as well as at the senior centre.

David is survived by his wife Helen; son Ben (Leslie) and their children Jerri and Duncan; son James (Maureen) and their children Hayden (Megan), Jackie, and Josie; son Greg (Colleen) and their children Max, Sam, and Abby; daughter Barb (Nevin) and their children Isabella and Nolan; sisters-in-law Lillian and Rita, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

He is predeceased by parents Ewald and Anita; his brothers Fred and Aubrey; and his sisters Joyce and Jean.

David will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all that knew him.

A Memorial Service was held on Friday July 9, 2021 for the immediate family at the Athabasca Community Chapel with Pastor Al Plat officiating.
