Dorothy Popeniuk Obituary

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Dorothy Popeniuk announce her passing at the age of 94 years.

Dorothy was born at home in Marcelin Saskatchewan, the middle child of 3 girls born to Wilford and Winnifred Freer.  She attended Paddling Lake School until grade 8 and then took grades 9-11 by correspondence.  Dorothy took commercial typing and shorthand courses which enabled her to enter a competitive workforce.  She started her career working as a receptionist at Eldorado Mines in Uranium City, SK, with other employment following including the Victoria Municipal Hospital in Prince Albert, SK, Department of Mines and Minerals for the Government of Alberta for ten years in Edmonton, CN Credit Union and finishing with a short-term typing position at the University Of Alberta Hospital.

In October 1964, she would meet her future husband Daniel Popeniuk in Edmonton and they would be married on July 3, 1965.  They raised a family of four children, enjoying every minute on their mixed farming operation in the Forfar District, west of Athabasca.  Mom loved her flowers and gardening, always busy outside weeding and caring for her plants.  She was active in the community, attending meetings of the Forfar Hall, helping with donations of food for the fall suppers, hosting NFU meetings in the living room of their home, holding the Secretary position for the Forfar Cemetery and was a dedicated member of the Anglican Church.

Mom moved to Pleasant Valley Lodge in 2017 to start a new chapter of her life.  Due to health issues, she moved to Athabasca Extendicare in March of 2022 and remained there until her passing.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Lorraine (John) and their children Mackenzie and Justin of Botha, AB, Katherine (Darwin) and their children, Dylan, and Bradley of Newbrook, AB, Carol (Les) and their children Celina and Nathan of Creston, B.C., and her son Daryl (Carol) and their daughter Lexi of Athabasca, numerous nieces, great nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

Dorothy was predeceased by her loving husband Dan, her parents Wilfred and Winnifred Freer, siblings Francis Marquis and Florence Lindstrom, in laws, Alfred Marquis, and Emil Lindstrom, nieces Phyllis Marquis, Wendy Marquis, and nephew Dwight Marquis.

There will be a formal funeral service held in Athabasca in the spring of 2024.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Forfar Cemetery Society or the charity of one’s choice. The family would be forever grateful for any donations made in mom’s memory.
