It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Harland “Hal” Merril Johnston on April 16, 2021 at the age of 97 years. Born in Richard, Saskatchewan on November 14, 1923, Hal was the youngest of 6 children. At around age 13, Hal’s family moved to Vancouver, B.C. Hal owned and operated Halwood Timber in Haney, B.C. where he and his wife Joyce raised three children: Beverly Benham, Brad Johnston and Carrie Johnston. He is Grand-dad to 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
For the last 20 years, Hal enjoyed living in Athabasca with his loving companion, Rosie Guay. Hal’s quick smile and helpfulness was appreciated at the Athabasca Lion’s Club, Royal Canadian Legion (a member for 65 plus years) and the Athabasca Pottery Club. Hal was the oldest living Veteran in the Athabasca Legion.
Hal will always be remembered as a “true gentlemen” and will forever by missed by his Johnston family, extended Guay family and community.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
