Mabel Florence Redden of Athabasca, Alberta, affectionately known as “Gammy” to family and many friends, died on November 1, 2023, at the age of 96 years.
She was born May 28, 1927, in Grimshaw, Alberta, the 4th child of 11 of Thomas Everett Blakley and Mabel Archibald. Mabel married Hubert Redden in 1947 and worked diligently on their farm in west Athabasca gardening, caring for animals, milking cows, and operating much of the farming equipment. Mabel’s kitchen table was often home to card games, visiting, or a plentiful home cooked meal. She was an avid curler and later followed it closely on TV as well as the Toronto Blue Jays. She loved to camp and travel and spent many winters south of the border. She adored her family and that was reciprocated. When family got together, there was always jovial teasing and many games of cribbage where she was usually victorious. Mabel left the farm in 1995 and lived with her daughter Noreen (and Wayne). In 2015 she moved into Pleasant Valley Lodge in Athabasca where she lived until her passing.
Mabel is survived by her daughters Faye (Greg) Stevenson of Athabasca, Carol (Marc) Benoit of Wainwright, and Noreen Redden (Wayne Dzuba) of Athabasca., her sister Jean Aubin of Edmonton, 5 grandchildren, and 1 (soon to be 2) great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Mabel’s life will be held in June of 2024. The date and time will be communicated later.
Donations in Mabel’s name can be made to a charity of choice.
