It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother Mary Devanthey on May 28, 2026, shortly after her 97th birthday.
Mary was born in 1929 to pioneer parents in the BlueJay area of northern Alberta. She worked on the family farm until her marriage at the age of 16, after which she farmed her own homestead with her husband John and son Dennis. There she raised four children. In caring for her family, Mary developed a gift for medicine while combatting illnesses common in those days. On more than one occasion, her knowledge and care saved the lives of her children. Given a chance in another era, she would undoubtedly have become a doctor.
Mary was proud to be a farmer, but her proudest achievement was in raising four children. She was known to others for her kindness, generosity, good judgement and hard work. She loved to read and to cook, and she possessed a beautiful singing voice.
Mary was the best mother one could hope for. She will be missed. She is survived by her children Dennis Devanthey, Stella Devanthey, Aji Fliss and Lorraine Devanthey and grandchildren Brennan and Lindsey Maloney.
Services will be held at St. Isidore Roman Catholic Church in Plamondon, Alberta on June 20th, 2026 at 2:00 PM, followed by interment at the Atmore Cemetery. A lunch will be served afterward.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to Kindness in Action Service Society of Alberta (kindnessinaction.ca).
