It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Koons (Katona), who passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, at the age of 88, following a stroke. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, on March 13, 1937, Mary lived a life full of love, resilience, and devotion to her family.
Mary grew up at beautiful Baptiste Lake, where she developed a lifelong love of nature and community. As the wife of an RCMP member, she lived in many small towns across Alberta, embracing each new place with grace and warmth. Her adaptability and kindness left a lasting impression wherever she went.
Mary spent many years working in the banking industry, where she was known for her professionalism, warmth, and genuine enjoyment of helping customers. Her dedication and friendly nature made her a beloved figure in her community.
Outside of work, Mary had a vibrant and joyful spirit. She loved curling, reading, and playing cards with friends and family. Mary was a lifetime member of Grosmont Community Club, where she volunteered for many years. Mary also had a passion for travel, especially the cherished fall trips she took with her husband to British Columbia, moments she held close to her heart.
Mary loved to cook for her family and friends, and her cabbage rolls were legendary, they were always requested and always enjoyed. She also loved berry picking, and her apple and pumpkin pies were the best. One of her grandchildren’s favorite memories was making cookies with Grandma. She was also known for hosting wonderful gatherings, where friends and family came together to share food, laughter, and stories, a tradition that brought joy to many and created lasting memories.
She is survived by her daughters Barbara Greenwood (Rodney) and Donna Parr (Donald Bryan); her Daughter-in-Law Serena Elliot (Chris); her grandchildren CJ Parr, Joel Parr (Arja Sormo), Zachary Greenwood (Hermin Lee), Michael Ursuliak, Adam Koons (Jessie Speakman), and Mikayla Koons (James Jobin); and her great-grandchildren Ailo, Emmett, Mai, Waylon, and Sierra.
Mary also leaves behind her loving siblings: Julius Katona Jr. (Edith), Margaret Osinchuck (Clarence), Elise Martin, Albert Katona and sister-in-law, Deanna Katona, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will miss her dearly.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband James Koons, her son Robert Koons, her father Julius Katona Sr., her mother Elizabeth Katona (Torok), and her brothers Joe Katona and William Katona.
Her warmth, strength, and unwavering love for her family were the cornerstones of her life. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched.
A funeral service will be held at the Athabasca Reformed Church on Sunday, August 17 at 3:00 p.m., with lunch and interment to follow. All who knew and loved Mary are welcome to attend and celebrate her life.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Westlock Hospital for the wonderful and compassionate care Mary received during her stay their, your kindness and support during this difficult time meant so much.
