Maxine Golonka Obituary

It is with a deep sense of loss that I, Ron, announce the passing of my loving wife Maxine Charlaine Golonka (Belanger) at age 67 on January 20th, 2022 at the Athabasca Health Care Center. Maxine with her beautiful smile, optimism and compassion for others courageously fought and endured a long struggle of 11 years with cancer. In keeping with Maxine’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Maxine’s wish was that she be remembered as we knew her in life.

Maxine was born in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan and in her early years moved with her family to North Battleford, where she lived and attended school. Following graduation she moved to live and work in Vancouver, as well as Edmonton before moving to Athabasca in the mid 1970’s. In Athabasca, she was employed by Aspen View Schools, Athabasca University and Athabasca Family and Community Support Services. During these years, because of her passion for helping others, she became involved in Victim Services as an Advocate. Her commitment to this service and the people it served led her to become the Coordinator of Victim Services for the Athabasca area. She remained in this role until her retirement in 2018.

Maxine is survived by her loving husband Ron of 30 years and her siblings and their families, including brothers: John and wife Esther ( Nola, Darren), Frank and wife Elaine (Christopher, Angela, Krista and Jay); and her sister Diane (Lasha). Maxine was predeceased by her mother Cecile. Maxine is also lovingly remembered by many dear long time friends, other extended family members and those she helped through her community service work.

Maxine’s love and commitment for family and friends coupled with her devotion to her Yorkshire Terriers kept her always on the go. Her love of the outdoors and her adventurous spirit to try something new kept everyone’s lives around her interesting. Maxine was a strong individual, confident in her beliefs of right and wrong who never hesitated to challenge others. Maxine - a woman to remember. She will be greatly missed.

Sincere thanks is extended to Dr. Michael Burger, the University of Alberta Hospital, the Cross Cancer Institute and all of the Aspen Health Care Staff who were involved in Maxine’s care. Great appreciation and gratitude is extended to Maxine’s special and very good friend Jeanie.
