Melvin Ryan
1949-2021
It is with great sadness the family of Melvin (Mel) Dwayne Ryan announce his passing on May 14, 2021, at the age of 71 years.
Mel was born September 20, 1949, in Athabasca to Archie and Doreen Ryan, where he resided his entire life. He had a great love of the outdoors from a young age and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
On November 23, 1971, he married the love of his life, Judy Boehlke. Together they operated Riverside Sporting Goods in Athabasca for nearly 20 years, giving Mel a chance to share his love of hunting, fishing, and various sports with the entire community. The “shop” became a local hangout for many with the coffee pot always on and good fish stories being shared. Later, he went on to become Service Manager at Athabasca Outdoor Products where friends continued to pop in to visit.
Mel and Judy raised three daughters and were blessed later with ten grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, all of whom were able to enjoy sharing in his love of the outdoors.
He was predeceased by his parents, Judy’s parents Henry and Bernice Boehlke, son in law Jim Green, brother-in-law George Edwards, sister-in-law Dorothy Ryan, nephew Eric Ryan and niece Kendall Koehler.
Mel leaves to mourn his loss, his loving wife Judy and children Stacee (Dan) Taylor, Carla (Henri) Simoneau and Marsha (Todd) Laing, grandchildren Jordan (Daron) Weber, Randall (Kendall) Weber, Becca (Tate) Weber, Shaila (Tyler) Holub, Aimee Holub, Ryan Holub, Bailee Laing, Kailee Beauchamp, Reed Beauchamp, Maddax Laing and great-granddaughter Jaelyn Weber. As well as his brother Gerald Ryan, sister Judy Edwards, sister-in-law Geri (Glen) Koehler, brother-in-law Dan (Anne) Boehlke, and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
No service will be held at this time due to Covid restrictions.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SCARS Second Chance Animal Rescue Society.
