Paula Cure Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Paula Eva Marie Curé (née Sarrazin). As the sun set on the afternoon of January 3rd, 2023, she passed away surrounded by her loved ones at the age of 81 years old.

On October 17, 1941, Paula was born on her family’s farm near Spiritwood, Saskatchewan, to parents Mathias and Simonne Sarrazin. She grew up on the farm as the youngest of three siblings. Her family later sold their farm and moved into the town of Spiritwood, where Paula graduated high school at the top of her class. Shortly after, she began a career at the local bank. She would go on to work at the bank for several years, until meeting Léo Curé. Paula & Léo were married on a cold winter day on January 25, 1969 in Spiritwood, SK. They then moved to Pine Falls, Manitoba, where they had their family of three children: Marcella, Léo Jr., and Crystal. They raised their children in Pine Falls, Manitoba until 1979, when they decided to head west to Alberta for better employment opportunities for Leo. They settled in the County of Athabasca on an acreage near the hamlet of Colinton, Alberta, where they permanently remained to raise their family.

Paula was a loving, nurturing, and supportive mother who stayed home to raise her children. Before re-entering the workforce, Paula and Leo had a foster home where they fostered several children over the years. In the mid 1980’s, Paula decided to re-enter the workforce. She began working at the local sewing shop in the town of Athabasca, Alberta, where she was able to put many of her sewing and crafting skills to work. Shortly after, she decided to upgrade her education, then later went on to work for the County of Athabasca. In addition to this position, she also worked as a French teacher’s assistant at the Boyle School in Boyle, Alberta. Her fluent reading and writing skills in French were excellent and she thoroughly enjoyed working with the French students. Paula was a hard worker who also worked several waitressing jobs to help support her family. In addition to her work, she gave back to the community as an active volunteer with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets for many years.

Paula was well-known around her community for always taking the time to stop and chat with anyone and to lend an ear to those in need. Paula had a patient, gentle, and kind demeanor with everyone and always wore a beautiful contagious smile.

Paula will be fondly remembered by her children for her self-sacrifice, her zest for life, her love of nature, and for her amazing cooking and baking abilities. During her retired years, she enjoyed spending her time gardening, birdwatching, sewing and knitting, and immersing herself in a book. Her daily ritual consisted of coffee, accompanied by a wordsearch and her favorite crime shows. Paula was a strong and fiercely independent woman who inspired the people she touched throughout her life. She had a deep appreciation for the simple things and was never extravagant. Her genuine, kind, loving spirit will be sorely missed by all those who knew her.

Paula was predeceased by her husband Léon Frank Curé; her parents Mathias & Simonne; her sister Margaret; and her brother George.

She is survived by her 3 children: Marcella Curé, Léo Curé Jr. & Crystal Curé; as well as her 3 grandchildren: Jada, Turner, and Marshal.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
