It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Peter Steve Golanski on May 8, 2025, at the University of Alberta hospital at the age of 79 years old.
He was born in Ingolstadt, Germany on April 3, 1946, in a work camp during World War II where he spent his first 2 years with his mother, Eva, father, Joseph and sister Mary. After the war ended, his family immigrated to Canada and started their new life in Beverly, Alberta. Peter graduated from East Glen High School in Edmonton, Alberta. On August 31, 1968, he married his blind date, Judy and they were happily married for 56 years. After graduating from NAIT in Instrumentation Technology, he started his long, successful career with GCOS in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Peter was one of the first Instrumentation journeyman in Alberta. GCOS later became Suncor Energy where he worked for 34 years holding many positions, including manager of the Extraction plant. In Fort McMurray, he became involved with the community by coaching many sports, such as basketball, soccer, baseball, and bowling. He was an avid golfer and in his golfing life achieved 2 holes-in-ones in which he was very proud of.
When he retired, he and Judy settled in the Summer Village of Bondiss on beautiful lake front property and for the past 20 years have become very invested in the community of Boyle, Alberta. He volunteered with the Boyle Seniors Centre as board member and President, was the Mayor of the Summer Village of Bondiss for many years, board member for the Boyle Fitness Centre, former member for the Boyle Library board, and board member and past-President of the Skeleton Lake Golf Course. He was proud to have been awarded a Lifetime membership to the Skeleton Lake Golf Course for his dedication and service over the years. As he was so passionate about golf, he wanted to share his passion with young children of all ages and started a Junior Golf program. It also gave him great joy watching his children and grandchildren participate in their numerous extra-curricular activities that they enjoyed.
Another accomplishment is the family he leaves behind, his beloved wife Judy, his three daughters Dayna (Steven), Karen (Jason) and Lauren (Glen) and his seven grandchildren Laurel (Brim), Brianna, Caitlyn, Logan, Ryley, Mackenzie and Molly. He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Ken), his two brother in laws, Larry (Liz) and Rob, his sister in law, Janice (Jim) and his five niece and nephews, Margareta (Peter), Michael (Stephanie), Garnet, Charles (Katie) and Chris (Chelsea). He was predeceased by his parents Eva and Joseph and daughter Elena. His kindness, community spirit and positive attitude will be missed deeply by his family, his mother in law Gwen Smith, the community, the hundreds of friends he gathered throughout his life and the thousands of children he helped coach over 55 years as Papa G.
Celebration of Life and sharing of memories will be held on Friday, May 23, 2025, at 1:30pm at the Boyle Community Centre.
