Sylvan Glen Moshuk passed away in the Athabasca Hospital on July 19th at the age of 69.
He will be lovingly remembered by his son Arlo and brother Allan. Sylvan was predeceased by his parents Alex and Annie Moshuk. Sylvan grew up on his parents’ small mixed farm near Hylo. He left home at the age of sixteen and did many types of work over his lifetime. At various times he worked construction, was a fire look out, and was a surveyor. He was a cook both in Edmonton and at work camps in Northern Alberta. He was a certified Life Coach and worked in Drift Pile among other communities. In later years he became a civil engineer and helped design many of the buildings, subdivisions, and developments in our area.
Sylvan was a free spirit and nonconformist with a strong passion for environmental sustainability and social justice. He was never afraid to stand up for what he thought was right. He had an informed and critical perspective on national and international events and loved to discuss and debate. He was an active member of the NDP, serving on the executive of several constituency associations over the years and was involved in various environmental and social justice causes as well. He was an avid gardener and cyclist and did what he could to minimize his environmental footprint. For him it was never about money but about passion and doing the right thing, and he willingly paid the price for his life choices.
He spent the last 25 years of his life on his acreage near Caslan in a small house he designed himself, and built with help from his father and his son. Visitors were always welcome. He loved to tell anecdotes and stories of the people he knew with both love and humour. He loved accordion music and was an avid player himself, and he also loved folk and blues music. He was a master of the martial art of aikido and although he never threw his weight around, he could throw yours if he had to. Sylvan was proud of his Ukrainian roots and had huge respect for and many friends in the local Metis community. When you visited him, you would be sure to take away a few good stories, some excellent advice, and probably some vegetables from his garden too.
Cremation has already taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Caslan Community Hall September 13th at 1 pm.
