Sylvia Madsen Obituary

Sylvia Madsen

1925-2021

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sylvia Madsen on January 17, 2021, at the age of 95 years. Sylvia was born on November 25, 1925, at Clyde, Alberta. She was the 10th child of 13 born to Charles and Eliza Hill. She was the last one of her siblings to pass. She spent most of her adult life around Boyle, marrying Hans Madsen in 1946, loving and working on the family farm in the Flat Lake area. She had 2 children, Doug Madsen and Lorraine Barnhouse.

She was predeceased by her husband Hans Madsen, her son Doug Madsen. She is survived by her daughter Lorraine Barnhouse (Les), daughter-in-law Liz Madsen, grandchildren, Hillary, Mark (Sharla), Adam (Lisa), Norman (Christina), Keith (Megan), and 7 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Pearl Madsen and many nieces and nephews. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Sylvia was a typical farmer's wife, helping with the chores on the farm, gardening, caring for her children and she loved animals, dogs, cats, rabbits, and horses. She also loved playing the guitar and singing, which was passed down to her children and grandchildren.

Once they became just grain farmers in their later years, she worked for years at Doug’s Super A store in Boyle, Alberta. When they sold the farm, they moved to her son’s acreage, into their own mobile home. They spent their time bowling, play bingo, board games, card games, and spending time with family. After Hans passed, she stayed in her home for years, until she moved to the Wildrose Villa in Boyle and after her health declined, she was moved over to the Athabasca Healthcare Centre, Long Term Care until her passing.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Boyle Wildrose Villa and Athabasca Long Term Care for their kind and compassionate care during her residency there.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or Parkinson Association of Alberta.

Due to the current health crisis, a private family graveside service will be held.
