Eddie Patrick Laine

August 14, 1933 – May 18, 2017

Eddie passed away Thursday, May 18, at the Athabasca Healthcare Centre – he was 83 years old. It was a short battle with cancer and he passed peacefully, surrounded by several family members. He maintained a positive attitude to the end.

Eddie was born on August 14, 1933, in Radway, Alberta. His parents – Hanna and Harvey – were Finnish immigrants and homesteaders in the area. He was the youngest of his five sisters and five brothers and attended school in Radway until the family moved to the Meanook area when he was fourteen.

He was a hard worker and labored on the farm since he was a young boy. While a teenager, he left to find work, eventually finding a long career in road construction that took him all over Alberta and Western Canada for several decades. In 1964, he married his wife, Jean, and permanently settled in the Meanook area where he continued working in road construction and farming.

He loved raising cattle, and loved dogs more. He also enjoyed his retirement years, spending time with friends and family, and had a special bond with many neighbors in the Meanook area of the Tawatinaw Valley.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jean, on January 28, 2002. He leaves his children: Tom (Bernie) Stump, Charlette (Denis) Willcott, Stewart Stump, and Bernadine (David) Boven; grandchildren: Cory Stump (Theresa), Carla Stump, Candace (Robin) McGhee, Amanda Willcott (Corey), Taylor Stump, Curtis Boven, and Kyle (Claire) Boven; great grandchildren: Tyler, Ashton, Eden, Kahlin, Paige, Dani, and Clive.

The family would like to thank: Dr. Tankel and staff at the Cross Cancer Institute, Dr. Ferguson at the Royal Alexandria Hospital, Dr. Adekunle Ogunnupe in Athabasca, the Athabasca Palliative Home Care Team (health unit nurses and aides), and the amazing nurses and support staff at the Athabasca Healthcare Centre during Eddie’s short stay in the Palliative Care unit. The family would like it known that the people who help make the Palliative Care unit possible are exceptional individuals.

Donations can be made in Eddie’s memory to the Athabasca Palliative Care Association.

At Eddie’s request, no formal service will be held at this time.
