The official obituary of

Joan Maxine Martyniuk (Née Byrtus)

October 15, 1946 — October 3, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Martyniuk (Née Byrtus) of Athabasca, Alberta. Our beloved Mom, Grandma, great grandmother, sister, and dear friend.

Mom was one of those rare people who left a little piece of herself in everyone she met. She was kind, caring, compassionate, and loving, with a heart that always had room for one more person. To know her was to love her, and the love she gave so freely will stay with us forever.

For 35 years, Mom devoted herself to nursing, a career she truly loved. Caring for others was more than a job to her—it was a calling. She gave her time, her heart, and her compassion to the people she cared for, and the lives she touched will forever be a part of her legacy. In 2010 Mom retired after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis two years prior. Although MS changed many things in her life, it never changed who she was. She remained strong, loving, and devoted to the people who mattered most to her.

Joan married Steve Martyniuk (1968 -1994) they had two wonderful sons, Brent Martyniuk and Lee Martyniuk, who will carry her love and memories with them always.

She was a proud and loving Grandmother to her grandchildren, Jeff, Taylor, Jordyn, and Kayden. And a cherished great-grandmother to her three great-grandchildren, Jaxyn, Hailey and Hunter. And numerous nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by her beloved sister, Pat (Harvey) Parkinson, brother, Ronald (Diane) Byrtus, along with numerous close friends who were an important part of her life.

She was predeceased by her parents Joe and Annie Byrtus and younger sister Carol.

Mom's family meant everything to her. She treasured the time she spent with those she loved, and the memories she created will remain with us forever. We will remember her laughter, her stories, her strength, her kindness, and all the little things that made her uniquely Mom.

There are no words that can truly express how deeply she will be missed. Her absence leaves a space in our lives that can never be filled. But the love she gave us is something that can never be taken away.

Rest peacefully, Mom. Your work here is done; you can finally rest.

Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our mom, Grandma, great grandmother, sister, and friend.

Honorary pallbearers Bill Douglas, Craig King, Olga Pacholok and Iris Bravo García.
