Peter Mihailuk
1939-2018
Peter passed away doing what he dearly loved, farming. He was driving the tractor doing summer fallow when he had a sudden heart attack.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his loving wife, Irene (nee Baker/Hill) married 39 years, his daughters Diane Gudmundson (Eddie Walton), Christina (Tina ) Lievers (Neil), his sons Brian Hill (Bonnie), Gordon Hill, and Larry Hill (Amber), his sister Vicky Cameron, Nipawin, Sask, various nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Peter will be greatly missed by all because he was always teasing everyone wherever he went.
Peter grew up on a farm near Carrot River, Saskatchewan. When he left home he worked for a time on a cattle ranch belonging to his uncle, John Monyia near Rock Glen, Sask. Then he moved to northern Sask where he worked in gravel pits, lumber mills in many different locations. In 1959, he tired of working such long hours for $1.00 per hour, came to Alberta with a friend to check out job possibilities. He immediately acquired a job for better pay, better accommodations, operating heavy equipment (starting with cats) in the oil industry. Soon Peter worked his way up to tract backhoes, graders and all manner of oilfield equipment for over 50 years to supplement his farming income, once he purchased a farm. He was greatly respected by all who employed him. He was very skilled at equipment operating and made the job fun for everyone because of his teasing and storytelling.
Peter’s funeral will be held in the Athabasca Missionary Church on June 22, 2018 at 1:00 pm with viewing from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. Cremation will take place after the funeral.
Pete’s remains will rest, eventually, in the Richmond Park Cemetery close to the farm where we have lived north of the Athabasca River for over 40 years.
