Olia Maria Marchuk

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Olga (Olia) Marie Marchuk (nee Kowalchuk) on May 27, 2026, at the age of 93.

Olia was born on September 7, 1932 to parents Matiy and Barbara Kowalchuk.  She is lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Peter Marchuk on March 13, 2017 (64 yrs of marriage), her parents Matiy and Barbara Kowalchuk, 5 brothers Peter, William, Nick, Michael, Arthur, 3 sisters Donia, Martha, Annie, infants Nicholas & Dymtro and her beloved best friend Rex (dog).

Olia was a school teacher for 37 years, her first 5 years were spent at Pine Creek School.  After being married in 1954, her and Peter moved to Boyle where she taught for 2 years.  They then moved to Athabasca where she taught Grade 4 for many years mainly LA & French.  Olia was a kind soul who touched the lives of many from students to strangers she was always willing to help in any way she could.

She retired in 1988 and spent most of her time working on the hobby farm with Peter.  Olia loved her trips to BC for berry & apple picking, sewing aprons for family, friends and fundraisers.  She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed Football, Hockey & Baseball. Her special place was her garden full of beautiful flowers, delicious vegetables and her raspberry orchard.

A Funeral will be held Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Athabasca Community Chapel at 10:30 a.m. officiated by Rev.Fr.Dr. Roman Shiyan.

In honour of Olia and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Athabasca Healthcare Auxiliary or a charity of one’s choice.
